Sauna renovation Surabaya: reviving a room that has gone quiet

Sauna renovation in Surabaya starts on site with an honest diagnosis, not a quotation form: we open the walls, check the heater, and tell you plainly whether a bench swap will do or the whole wall build-up needs redoing. Most projects across the city fall in the IDR 15–50 million range, and every repair carries our 2-year warranty.

Almost every week a similar message reaches us: a sauna inherited from a previous homeowner in Darmo that has sat untouched for ten years, a hotel heat room in Gubeng that guests have started to complain about, or a home cabin in Dharmahusada that suddenly trips the breaker every time it is switched on. The owner is unsure whether to repair it or tear it out.

A tropical climate speeds up the ageing of a sauna that was not built properly in the first place. Surabaya’s humidity works its way into a wall with no vapour barrier, the wrong species of wood starts to warp, and an older generation of wiring runs right at its limit. The good news is that most of that damage is recoverable without starting from zero.

Our working principle is simple: diagnose first, sell second. We open the structure up, measure it, photograph the real condition, and hand you the findings with a menu of options — from a minimum repair to a full renewal. The decision stays in your hands.

Signs your sauna is asking for renovation

A few symptoms are worth acting on quickly: timber that has darkened or carries a musty smell that will not clear even with the vents open, a bench that feels cracked or spongy underfoot, a room that takes noticeably longer to heat than it used to, a breaker that trips when the heater switches on, and heater stones that have started to crumble. Any one symptom alone rarely spells disaster, but two or three together usually point to a problem sitting in a layer you cannot see. We would rather you send a photo and ask than wait until a symptom becomes a hazard — an electrical fault inside a hot, humid room is not something to postpone.

The most common tropical-climate failures we find

Our findings tend to circle the same handful of patterns. First, a wall built without aluminium foil or a ventilation gap — vapour works its way into the insulation, and mould develops in that hidden space within two to three years. Second, local hardwood fitted on the interior: ulin and bengkirai are strong on a porch, but inside a hot room they hold excess heat and can weep resin. Third, ventilation that was never properly planned, so the cabin never fully dries between sessions. Fourth, sub-standard electrical work: ordinary cable in place of heat-resistant cable, with no residual-current protection at all.

How much does a sauna renovation cost in Surabaya?

TypeIndicative price
Sauna renovation (light repair to full rebuild)IDR 15–50 million
Harvia heater replacement, 6–9 kW, installedIDR 15–35 million
New accessory set (bucket, ladle, stones, thermometer)IDR 1.5–8 million
New build, if renovation is not cost-effectivefrom IDR 40 million

The range above is indicative; the firm quote follows a diagnosis and a free survey. We deliberately tier the renovation quote into required, recommended, and optional work, so you can see which items are a safety matter that cannot wait and which are a comfort upgrade that can follow later.

What renovation work actually covers

The scope comes straight out of the diagnosis, usually some mix of: replacing interior panelling with western red cedar, spruce, or thermowood; new benches in aspen or abachi that will not scald skin; rebuilding the wall layers properly with rockwool, a vapour-barrier foil, and a ventilation gap; a new heater alongside updated heat-resistant cabling and circuit protection; an 8 mm tempered glass door in place of a warped timber one; corrected intake and exhaust airflow; and a modern control panel replacing an old mechanical dial. Wood choice is covered in more depth in our guide to sauna materials for a tropical climate, and a full cost breakdown of building fresh sits in our sauna cost guide for Surabaya.

What a diagnosis leaves you with

Every diagnosis visit ends with more than a verbal opinion. We photograph the wall cavity where it has been opened, note moisture readings where relevant, and list every component we would touch — panelling, benches, heater, wiring, door — against a plain verdict of keep, repair, or replace. That written record is what the tiered quote is built from, and it is also useful documentation to keep on file if the property changes hands later or an insurer asks questions about the installation.

Reusing what still works

Renovation is not automatically a full strip-out. A heater in good condition can often stay in place while we rebuild the wall around it; a foundation or frame that has never taken on water rarely needs touching at all. We separate genuinely worn components from ones that simply look tired after years of use — a bench darkened by steam and sweat is not necessarily a bench that has failed structurally. Keeping sound material in place is usually the single biggest saving on a renovation quote, and it is one reason our tiered pricing sometimes comes in well under the top of the indicative range.

Renovating without closing the business

For hotels, spas and gyms, a sauna standing idle is a paid facility earning nothing. We break commercial renovations into short stages: noisy, dusty work is scheduled for closing hours, the work area is sealed off tightly from guest areas, and each stage is handed back functioning before the next one opens. Our commercial clients are mostly based around Gubeng, the Darmo area, and Pakuwon; a temporary equipment need during the renovation window can be covered through our spa equipment supply line.

When to renovate, when to rebuild

We draw this line by calculation, not by feel. If the main structure is sound and the problem is concentrated at the surface — panelling, benches, heater — renovation almost always wins on cost. If the frame has been eaten through by mould everywhere, the room dimensions were wrong from the start, or you want a very different capacity, building new is actually cheaper across five years. We state that conclusion plainly on the diagnosis sheet, with the comparative numbers alongside it. For a room built from a clean slate, our home sauna builder page sets out sizing and pricing, and an infrared cabin is worth a look if you want to sidestep heavy electrical work entirely.

Where we renovate most

Most renovation requests come from Gubeng and the Darmo area, where older houses carry saunas built a decade or more ago, followed by Dharmahusada, where ageing home cabins near the campus corridor commonly need a heater swap or a wall rebuild.

How ordering works

  1. Describe the problem on WhatsApp, with photos of the current condition.
  2. Our manager calls that same day to understand how the sauna has been used.
  3. Extra photos — bench, heater, ceiling — sharpen the initial diagnosis.
  4. An on-site diagnosis visit costs nothing.
  5. We present the findings alongside a visual of the repair options.
  6. A tiered quote is drawn up: required, recommended, optional.
  7. A 50% deposit is paid and the work is scheduled.
  8. The sauna returns to service after a test heat-up, with the renovation backed by a 2-year warranty.

Do not let an old sauna become a storage room. Send photos over WhatsApp today — our sauna renovation team in Surabaya will tell you honestly what can still be saved, and what it will cost.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How much does a sauna renovation cost in Surabaya?

Most projects land in the IDR 15–50 million range; a Harvia heater replacement at 6–9 kW including installation is IDR 15–35 million. These ranges are indicative — the firm number follows a diagnosis and free survey at your property.

My sauna has mould — does it need a full rebuild?

Not necessarily, but it has to be checked right down into the wall. If mould sits only on the surface, replacing the interior panelling is enough; if the vapour-barrier foil was never installed in the first place, the structure behind it is usually damaged too and the wall build-up needs redoing properly.

The heater has died — can we just replace that one part?

Yes, and this is the renovation we carry out most often: a new Harvia, Sawo or Tylo unit at 6–9 kW under factory warranty. While we are in there, we also check the old wiring and breakers — a new heater sitting on old, undersized wiring is a dangerous combination.

How long is the sauna out of use during renovation?

It depends on scope: a heater or bench swap is done within days, while rebuilding the wall layers takes longer. The exact duration is set out in the quote, and for commercial facilities we schedule work so the rest of the building keeps operating.

Is renovation work guaranteed?

Yes — all our construction work carries a 2-year warranty, and a new heater carries a 1–2 year factory warranty. If our inspection concludes that a new build genuinely makes more sense than a repair, we say so plainly; the option sits on our home sauna builder Surabaya page.
