Cold plunge Surabaya: water that actually stays cold in a tropical city

We build cold plunge tubs in Surabaya with a 1/2–1 HP chiller that holds water at 3–15°C all day, not a barrel of ice that has gone lukewarm by lunchtime. A complete wooden ice bath with chiller runs IDR 45–90 million with a 1–2 week install, for private homes as much as gyms and padel clubs.

Wooden cold plunge tub with chiller unit installed in Surabaya

Five years ago an ice bath was strictly an elite athlete’s ritual. Today it appears on the wishlist of almost every new gym, padel club and premium home we work with in Surabaya, from Pakuwon to Gubeng. The reason is simple: stepping into cold water after training makes the body feel switched back on, and once someone has tried it they rarely want to stop.

The problem is that cold water is a genuine luxury in a tropical city. Tap water in Surabaya runs warm, and a tub filled with ice in the morning has lost its bite well before midday. Without mechanical cooling, cold therapy turns into a tiring, expensive ice-logistics exercise rather than a wellness routine.

That is where our work sits: a thermowood tub with a waterproof liner, paired with a chiller working quietly out of sight, plus filtration and sanitation so the water stays fit to get into. One system, fully installed, under warranty.

Why does a cold plunge in Surabaya need a chiller at all?

City air holds at 24–33°C for most of the year, so still water will always creep upward to match room temperature. Ice only delays that process by a few hours. A 1/2–1 HP chiller behaves like a refrigerator for your tub: water is circulated through a cooling unit and returned at whatever temperature you have locked in on the panel, anywhere from 15°C down to as low as 3°C. The result is consistent — a six a.m. session and a nine p.m. session feel equally cold, with no preparation beyond lifting the tub cover.

Tub construction: thermowood, liner and drainage

We build the tub body from larch or thermowood — timber that copes well with repeated wetting and drying — lined internally with a waterproof, hygienic membrane. The base is sloped toward a drain outlet so a full drain-down leaves no water pooling in the corners. Placement can be indoors next to a sauna, in an outdoor bathroom, or in the garden; for an open-air position we require a protective canopy against heavy rain and UV so both the timber and the mechanical unit last. The circulation piping to the chiller is routed as discreetly as possible so the plunge area stays visually clean. A fitted lid over the tub between sessions cuts down on both heat gain and debris, and we size the chiller with that habit in mind — a household that rarely covers the tub needs a slightly larger unit than one that always does.

Those numbers are indicative; the final quote follows a free site survey. The variables that shift it most: tub volume, the lowest temperature you are targeting, pipe run distance, and whether the unit serves one household or a queue of members.

Water you can actually get into: filtration, ozone, UV

Cloudy cold water puts people off — more so at a commercial facility where a queue is watching. Every installation of ours includes particle filtration and ozone or UV sanitation, which kills microorganisms without the sharp smell of chlorine. Paired with correct drainage and a water-change schedule, the tub stays clear through repeated use. For a home installation, upkeep is light: check the filter, drain on schedule, and wipe the timber surface down. A simple test strip kept beside the tub lets anyone in the household confirm the water is still within a safe range between our scheduled service visits.

Contrast therapy: pairing hot and cold

A cold plunge shows its real effect when paired with a heat room: several minutes at high temperature, a short cold immersion, repeated for two or three rounds. We go through the mechanism and the reasoning in our article on cold plunge and contrast therapy. If you do not yet have the heat side of that pairing, our commercial sauna for gyms and clubs or a full contrast therapy wellness zone brings both into a single design — usually cheaper than building each separately, later.

Cold plunge for gyms, padel clubs and spas

Commercial use changes the calculation: a tub used by dozens of people a day absorbs a constant stream of body heat, so chiller capacity has to be larger and filtration has to work harder. We size the specification to your member traffic — from a small recovery studio in Gubeng, to premium padel clubs and gyms in Pakuwon, to staff facilities inside industrial estates in Rungkut and Gresik. For commercial clients we also prepare a staff operating guide: temperature-check schedule, cleaning protocol, and the warning signs worth reporting.

How many people can use one tub in a day?

A single household tub comfortably supports a handful of sessions a day without extra demand on the chiller — body heat from one or two people barely registers against the total water volume. Commercial use is a different calculation: a padel club or gym tub can see thirty or more entries between opening and closing, and each entry adds a measurable dose of heat the chiller then has to remove before the next person gets in. When we size a commercial installation we ask for expected peak-hour traffic, not just daily totals, because a tub that recovers fine over a quiet morning can fall behind during a Saturday rush. Where traffic is genuinely high, we sometimes recommend two smaller tubs in rotation rather than one large one, so a session is never cut short waiting for the water to recover.

Electricity and where the chiller unit sits

A 1/2–1 HP chiller draws roughly 750–1,100 watts, well under the 7,700–11,000 VA a sauna heater alone can call for, so most houses never need to raise their PLN subscription just for the plunge. What is still non-negotiable: a dedicated circuit with its own breaker and ELCB protection — this equipment operates around standing water, and safety is not something we compromise on. The cooling unit also needs breathing room to shed heat, so we place it in a ventilated area away from the wall rather than boxing it into a closed cabinet.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How much does a cold plunge cost in Surabaya?

A complete wooden tub with chiller runs IDR 45–90 million installed; if you already own a tub, a standalone chiller is IDR 25–55 million. These are indicative figures — the firm quote follows a free survey of your site.

Why not just use bags of ice?

Because Surabaya's air warms the water back up within hours, the temperature swings with no control, and a daily ice run becomes an ongoing cost with no end date. A chiller gives the same temperature every session plus water filtration — one investment and the problem is solved.

What temperature is ideal for cold therapy?

The working range is 3–15°C. Beginners are comfortable starting in the low teens, and conditioned athletes work down gradually from there. Our chillers hold whichever point you set even when the outside air is at 33°C.

How do you keep the water hygienic?

Layered protection: particle filtration, ozone or UV sanitation, a drain with a sloped tub base, and a scheduled water change. Running cost sits around IDR 300,000–700,000 a month including the chiller's power draw.

Do we need to upgrade our PLN electrical supply?

Usually not — a 1/2–1 HP chiller draws far less than a sauna heater and runs fine on a dedicated circuit with its own breaker and ELCB protection. We cover the exact power requirement on our cold plunge chiller page.
